St. Peter’s on-the-Rock Church has been a very special place for hundreds of Stony Lake cottagers over many generations. The Christian Sacraments are celebrated here, as are other significant events in our lake community. Constructed in 1914, the historic buildings and facilities of St. Peter’s on-the-Rock are lovingly cared for and maintained by the members of our parish alone. It is our hope that you, and your families and friends, will benefit from your association with this wonderful community of St. Peter’s. St. Peter’s is an ‘affirming congregation’, meaning that we choose to be inclusive, and we welcome all who pass through our doors, regardless of religious affiliation. We also welcome LGBT couples who may wish to marry at our beautiful island Church.

Sir William Mackenzie was born in Kirkfield, Ontario in 1849. He was the eighth of nine children. Born in a log cabin with mud floors, he rose from total poverty to become one of the wealthiest men in the country. His accomplishments were many, including hydroelectric projects, street transportation systems and shipping lines. His influence was felt all over the world. Along with his partner Sir Donald Mann, Mackenzie was the only private individual to build and own a transcontinental railway. We know it today as the Canadian National Railway. He transformed early Toronto by electrifying the system of horse drawn trams to create the first streetcars. The TTC of today was born out of Mackenzie’s vision and enterprise.
The Kirkfield property was Sir William’s country estate from 1888 – 1923. He and Lady Mackenzie raised nine children here and at the turn of the 20th century the estate was nearly 1000 acres.
From 1927 to 1976 the property was owned by the Sisters of Saint Joseph based in Peterborough Ontario. The Sisters created St. Margaret’s School and Convent here. We’re fortunate enough to still have students who attended here visit us in the summer months and share their stories of the early years here from the 30s thru 60s.

Former St. Andrew’s Church 40 King Street West The cornerstone of this Gothic-style church, originally the Millbrook Methodist Church, was laid in 1881. The church opened in 1882. Built by the masons, carpenters and ironworkers of Millbrook, it was heralded as the largest village church between Toronto and Montreal, and was described as “one of the finest church buildings east of Toronto”. It could accommodate 450 on the floor of the auditorium and another 350 in the balconies that extended around the auditorium, supported by cast-iron pillars. In 1925, it became the Millbrook United Church when the union of churches occurred, and in 1930, was renamed St. Andrew’s United Church. The balconies were taken down, except at the south end, in 1940. The original wooden steeple had to be removed due to rot, and the ornamental spires and sweeping front steps have been lost. The church served the local United Church congregation until 2004.
